5 Star has always been at the forefront of technology and over recent months has seen the most investment and commitment to the future. To keep up with increased demand the company made two major investments, one being a second CNC machining centre and the decision to introduce 3D modeling software. Solid Edge from UGS was chosen in late 2004 and 5 Star’s technical department spent just six months configuring and implementing the system into existing processes. A vast set of case hardware, fixings, extrusions and case templates were modeled completely from scratch. Solid Edge is now being ‘rolled out’ to production and quotations and although will continue to be developed, clients can now benefit from this software.

Shown above is just four of hundreds of models from the library of parts created by 5 Star. These parts are available to each designer, as they are held on our main servers. Of course, the main advantage with Solid Edge models is that all parts, sub parts and assemblies are completely accurate in dimensions, giving the designer a realtime visual representation of the proposed case. Interference between fittings and extrusions for instance can immediately be seen and remedied.


	In this section, you will find 3D Solid Edge models of popular case projects and designs such as lighting equipment trunks and audio mixing consoles. All the files are saved in Package Collaboration Format (.pcf) for use with SE Viewer. This is a relatively small, free program available published by UGS, the developer of Solid Edge.

This program enables the user to view a special file generated by Solid Edge and is provided with various tools such as Rotate, Zoom and Pan. These features will be the most commonly used, as it enables the user to view the proposed case at any angle and detail. Other features include the ability to hide appropriate parts of the assembly (Lid, base etc.) so that internal views can be seen.
