Chessington – UK-based digital mixing console manufacturer DiGiCo has chosen 5 Star to manufacture the flightcase solution for its recently launched SD7 console. The initial discussions to develop a case took place at the PLASA show in September 2007, where the SD7 was shown for the first time as a ‘concept’ console, which soon turned into a full production model, holding true to DiGiCo’s rapid response ethos..

Based around an industry popular ‘Nosecone’ type flightcase, 5 Star worked closely with DiGiCo’s Chris Ladbrook, who heads the company’s Mechanical Design team, to develop a case that meets the additional demands of this high specification console As with DiGiCo’s D5 and D1 desks, the SD7 features ‘hot-swap’ power supply modules and a main processing engine, which slide out at low level from the rear of the unit. This requires the case to incorporate a hinged access flap to enable both these units to be easily and quickly removed. Support of the console is afforded by CNC machined plywood blocks, contoured to match the rear profile of the console while mounted against load bearing sections of the chassis and the case. 	Although the average speaker cabinet usually has a durable exterior finish, transporting these can pose many logistical problems, mainly due to the irregular shape that modern cabinets have. The normal design for speaker trunks is a ‘top hat’, where a shallow base makes removal of the cabinet a great deal easier. Speaker can incorporate flying frames pre-fitted or in a separate compartment.


	However, 5 Star can build to individual requirements should you have your own design preference.

	Available now is two distinctly different types of Laptop Case. Designed to suit up to most 17” and widescreen laptops and notebooks. Choose from traditional Light Industrial or the new LX Range.


	Both feature a tray to house the notebook, which is hinged on the Light Industrial version and removable on the LX Range.

The 5 Star Cases sales team expands with the addition of Richard Chilvers, who joins as Technical Sales representative. Chilvers has been a 5 Star case user for 10 years, ever since his early days as an apprentice with leading Leicestershire lighting rental company, Hawthorn Theatrical. He’s also worked as a technical manager at top producing and receiving theatre venues, including the Kings Lynn Corn Exchange and Arts Centre and the Princess Theatre in Hunstanton.

Joining 5 Star from Ely-based AV supplier QAV, Chilvers said “5 Star’s cases are the best in the business, and I’m very excited about working with such a great company selling such great products”.

Since Chilvers started in the industry, he’s cased just about everything imaginable with Cambridgeshire based 5 Star - from conventional elements like lighting, sound and AV kit of all descriptions to more unusual objects like beer pumps! He’s also an active musician, playing drums and bass guitar in addition to learning the mandolin, has qualifications in Technical Theatre, Electrical Installations & PAT testing and works as a freelance lighting and sound engineer in whatever spare time he has. 5 Star’s Head of Sales Phil Lawrence says “Richard brings a wealth of industry experience from touring, rental and installation operations ….
